1. 1. I go to sea

I was born in the year 1632, in the city of York, of a good family. At a very early age I wanted to go to sea. My father was a wise man, and he begged me not to do so. For a time I decided not to think of it any more. But one day in the city of Hull I met a friend who was going to sea on his father's ship. He asked me to go with him. Then, without asking my father, without asking God's blessing, without any thought of the result, I went on board the ship.

          ပင်လယ်ပျော်ဖြစ်ချင်လို့

          ၁၆၃၂ ခုနှစ်မှာ ကျွန်တော့်ကို မွေးပါတယ်။ ယော့ခ်မြို့ဇာတိဖြစ်ပြီး မိဘ တွေက ပစ္စည်းဥစ္စာ ပြည့်စုံကြပါတယ်။ ကျွန်တော်က ခပ်ငယ်ငယ်ကတည်းက ပင်လယ်ဘက်ထွက်ပြီး ပင်လယ်ပျော်ကြီးလုပ်ချင်တယ်။ ကျွန်တော့်အဖေက ဉာဏ်အမြော်အမြင်ရှိတဲ့ပုဂ္ဂိုလ်ဆိုတော့ မသွားချင်ပါနဲ့သားရယ်ဆိုပြီး အတန်တန် တားခဲ့တယ်။ ဒီလိုနဲ့ ကျွန်တော်လည်း ပင်လယ်အကြောင်း မတွေးတော့ပါဘူးလေ လို့ စိတ်တုံးချပြီး ကာလအတော်ကြာအောင် မေ့မေ့ပျောက်ပျောက် နေခဲ့ပါ တယ်။ ဒါပေမယ့် တစ်နေ့ ဟားလ်မြို့ကို ကျွန်တော်ရောက်သွားတယ်။ အဲဒီမှာ သူငယ်ချင်းတစ်ယောက်နဲ့ဆုံတယ်။ သူကလည်း သူ့အဖေ ရွက်သင်္ဘောကြီးနဲ့ ပင်လယ်ဘက်ခရီးထွက်တော့မယ့်ဆဲဆဲဆိုတော့ ကျွန်တော့်ကိုလိုက်ခဲ့ဖို့ အဖော် စပ်ပါလေရော။ ဘာပြောကောင်းမလဲ။ အဖေ့ဆီကလည်း ခွင့်မတောင်း၊ ဘုရား မ,ပါလို့လည်း ဆုမတောင်း၊ ဘာဖြစ်လာမယ်ဆိုတာလည်း တစ်ချက်ကလေးတောင် ထည့်မတွေးဘဲ သင်္ဘောကုန်းပတ်ပေါ် စေ့ ခန် ကျွန်တော် တက်လိုက်လာ ခဲ့တော့တာပါပဲ။

2. The ship is lost in the strom

On the same day we left Hull, meaning to go to the African coast. We guided the ship as if we were going to the island of Fernando de Noronha. Then we passed to the east of that island. After a few days there came a fearful storm. The wind and the waves threw the ship this way and that for twelve days. The ship was badly broken and a lot of water was coming in. Then one of our men, early in the morning, cried out, ‘Land!' just after that, the ship ran on to some sand. The waves came over. the ship, and we knew that very soon it would be broken to pieces. We had a small boat on board; we let the boat down into the water, and got into it. When we had gone some distance in the boat, a great wave came from behind. 'Oh, God!' we cried and we were all thrown into the water.

မုန်တိုင်းထဲမှာ

          အဲဒီနေ့ နေ့ချင်းပဲ အာဖရိက ကမ်းရိုးတန်းဘက်ကို သွားမယ်ဆိုတဲ့ ရည် ရွယ်ချက်နဲ့ ဟားလ်မြို့ကနေ ကျွန်တော်တို့ခွာခဲ့ကြတယ်။ သင်္ဘောကို ဖာနန်ဒိုဒီနို ရွန်ဟာကျွန်း ရှိရာဆီ ဦးတည်ရွက်လွှင့်တယ်။ နောက်တော့ ကျွန်းရဲ့ အရှေ့အရပ်ကို မှန်းပြီး ဖြတ်ခဲ့တယ်။ ရက်နည်းနည်းအကြာမှာ ကြောက်စရာ လန့်စရာကောင်းတဲ့ မုန်တိုင်းကြီးတစ်ခုနဲ့ တိုးတယ်။ လေပြင်းတွေတိုက်၊ လှိုင်းတွေရိုက်နဲ့ သင်္ဘော လည်း ဘယ်လူးညာလိမ့် ဖြစ်နေလိုက်တာမှ ဆယ့်နှစ်ရက်လုံးလုံး။ သင်္ဘော တစ်စင်းလုံး ရစရာမရှိအောင် ကျိုးပဲ့ပျက်စီးကုန်ပြီး အထဲကို ရေတွေ ဒလဟော ဝင်လာတယ်။ အဲဒီနောက် မနက်စောစောပိုင်းမှာ“ကုန်းတွေ့ပြီ”လို့ သင်္ဘောသား တစ်ယောက် အော်တဲ့အသံ ကြားလိုက်ရတယ်။ အဲဒီလို အော်သံကြားရရုံရှိသေး၊ ရေတိမ်သဲပြင်နဲ့ငြိပြီး သင်္ဘောသောင်တင်သွားပါလေရော။ လှိုင်းလုံးကြီးတွေက သင်္ဘောပေါ် တဝုန်းဝုန်း တက်လွှမ်းလာနေတာမို့ မကြာခင် တစ်စစီ ဖြစ်ကုန် တော့မယ်ဆိုတာ ကျွန်တော်တို့ သဘောပေါက်တယ်။ ဒါနဲ့ သင်္ဘောပေါ်တင်လာတဲ့ လှေကလေးတစ်စင်းကို ရေချပြီး လူအားလုံး လှေထဲဆင်းလိုက်ကြတယ်။ လှော် ထွက်မယ်မှ မကြံရသေးဘူး၊ နောက်ကနေ ဧရာမလှိုင်းလုံးကြီးတစ်လုံး လိုက် လာတယ်။ ကျွန်တော်တို့လည်း “ဘုရား”တဖို့တောင် အနိုင်နိုင်ရယ်။ လူတွေကို ကိုင်ပြီး လွှင့်ပစ်လိုက်သလို အားလုံး ရေထဲလွင့်စဉ်ကျသွားပါတော့တယ်။

3. I am thrown up on the land

A great wave took me and carried me on towards the shore: it left me on the land, badly hurt. I was very weak, but I got up on my feet and ran up to a dry place and lay there more dead than alive. After a time I was sick and threw up a great deal of sea water which had got into my stomach. Then I wanted to rest; but I dared not sleep on the ground for fear of being eaten by wild beasts.

So I climbed up into a tree, and remained there until morning. I was sure that all my friends had been killed and I alone had been saved. I was very tired and I quickly fell asleep.

ကုန်းပေါ်ကို ပစ်တင်လိုက်ပြန်တော့

          လှိုင်းလုံးကြီးတစ်လုံးက ကျွန်တော့်ကို ကမ်းခြေရောက်အောင် သယ်လာပြီး ကမ်းစပ် ကုန်းမြေပေါ်မှာ ဒဏ်ရာအနာတရတွေနဲ့ ချထားခဲ့တယ်။ လူလည်း ယုံယ့်ပဲရှိပါတော့တယ်။ ဒါပေမယ့် အတတ်နိုင်ဆုံးကြိုးစားပြီး မတ်တတ်ရပ်ကြည့် တယ်။ နောက် ခြောက်ခြောက်သွေ့သွေ့ ရှိတဲ့နေရာရောက်အောင် အားတင်းပြေးပြီး ထိုးလှဲချလိုက်တယ်။ တစ်ခါတည်း အသက်ပါထွက်သွားမလားလို့တောင် အောက် မေ့မိတယ်။ အတော်လေးကြာတော့ အနေရအထိုင်ရခက်လာပြီး ကျွန်တော့်ဗိုက်ထဲ ဝင်နေတဲ့ ပင်လယ်ရေတွေ တဝေါဝေါ့ အန်ထွက်လာတယ်။ အဲဒီနောက် ကျွန်တော် မှိန်းချင်လာတယ်။ ဒါပေမယ့် သားရဲတိရစ္ဆာန်တွေ အစားခံရမှာကြောက်လို့ မြေကြီးပေါ်မှာလည်း အိပ်မနေရဲဘူး။

          အဲဒါကြောင့် သစ်ပင်တစ်ပင်ပေါ်တက်ပြီး မနက်မိုးလင်းတဲ့အထိ အပင် ပေါ်မှာပဲ နေမယ်လို့ စိတ်ကူးတယ်။ ကျွန်တော့်အပေါင်းအဖော်တွေအားလုံးတော့ ပင်လယ်ထဲမှာ သေဆုံးကုန်ကြပြီထင်ပါရဲ့။ ဟုတ်တယ်၊ သေချာပါတယ်။ ခုတော့ အသက်ဘေးကလွတ်လာတာဆိုလို့ကျွန်တော်တစ်ယောက်တည်းပါလား။ ကျွန်တော် လည်း ပင်ပန်းလွန်းလို့ ကြာကြာစဉ်းစားတွေးတောမနေနိုင်တော့ဘဲ အိပ်ပျော်သွား ပါတယ်။

သင်္ဘောကြီးဆီ တစ်ခေါက်

          အိပ်ရာက ကျွန်တော်နိုးတော့ မိုးစင်စင်လင်းနေပြီ။ ခုတော့လည်း ပင်လယ်က တိတ်ချက်သားကောင်းလိုက်တာ။ ကမ်းခြေကနေ တစ်မိုင်မရှိတရှိ အကွာလောက် မှာတော့ သင်္ဘောကြီးက မလှုပ်မယှက်။ ကျွန်တော့်မှာ အသုံးအဆောင်ပစ္စည်းဆိုလို့ ဘာတစ်ခုမှ ပါလာတာမဟုတ်ဘူး။ စားစရာလည်းမပါဘူး။ အစာရှာနိုင်ဖွေနိုင်တဲ့ လက်နက်ကိရိယာလည်းမပါဘူး။ ဒါကြောင့် သင်္ဘောကြီးဆီရောက်အောင် တစ်ခေါက်သွားပြီး အသုံးဝင်မယ့် ပစ္စည်းပစ္စယလေးဘာလေး တွေ့လိုတွေ့ငြား ရှာကြည့်ဖို့ ဆုံးဖြတ်လိုက်တယ်။ အဝတ်အစားတွေချွတ်ပြီး သင်္ဘောဆီရောက်အောင် ကျွန်တော် ရေကူးသွားတယ်။ ရောက်တော့ သင်္ဘောဘေး အပေါက် တစ်ပေါက်ကနေ အပေါ်ကို တွယ်တက်တယ်။ သင်္ဘောနောက်ပိုင်း တစ်ပိုင်းလုံး ရေလွှမ်းနေပြီ။ ဒါပေမယ့် ရေမဝင်တဲ့နေရာတချို့တော့ ရှိသေးတယ်။
