Namo-tassa, the forest of the Blessed One, the forest of the Arahants, the forest of the Perfect Buddha,

The land of Bagan and the Bagan period are fundamental to the history of Myanmar, as well as to Burmese literature and culture. The Bagan period was a period when Myanmar progressed in all aspects. Throughout the history of Myanmar, Bagan will never be forgotten. Myanmar history will not be complete without Bagan. Every Burmese should know about such an important city.

There have been Burmese religious books and articles published about Bagan. A few English religious books have also been published. However, books that describe the Bagan period in a fairly detailed manner are very rare, and those who want to know and study about Bagan are not satisfied.

Therefore, while it may not be the most complete account of Bagan, I have studied and analyzed it from all angles, and have compiled and presented a broad view of Bagan as much as I have time to do so, so that you can see the whole picture.

Regarding the Bagan period, we mainly rely on chronicles and stone inscriptions. However, we only quote what is considered to be reasonable from the chronicles. It is considered that history should not be discarded without strong evidence like stone inscriptions. In addition, stone inscriptions can only be studied according to what is recorded in context, and it is not expected that all the events of the Bagan period will be found in the stone inscriptions. Therefore, the whole picture of the Bagan period must not be mythological, the evidence of the stone inscriptions must not be far from it, and the conclusions of the content must not be unreasonable.

This overview of Bagan is really just a glimpse into the Bagan period, and those who are familiar with it will need to study and criticize each topic in detail. It will also be necessary to look at the perspectives that have not been presented here. This overview is intended to be easy for ordinary people to read, and is not intended to be a scholarly research paper. However, I have tried to present the necessary references and be as accurate as possible. I have only provided footnotes where necessary, and I have not included footnotes for every point I have made, so as not to clutter the book. In any case, every written presentation is based on as much research as possible and conclusions are drawn, and I have boldly presented what I know and believe. Some conclusions are based on the traditions and opinions of some researchers. Or it may be contrary to conventional wisdom. If we find such a contradiction, we hope that we will use our own innate wisdom, reason, and natural logic to think and reason.

This panoramic view of Bagan has been comprehensively collected and presented in one place (or) in a series of studies, so it will be able to provide enough information for ordinary people. It will also provide clues for those who want to study further. It will also reflect on the progress of the people of Burma, saying, "This is how Bagan was." If it is of this benefit, the author must be happy.

(In fact, the author, due to his work responsibilities, has to work hard to fill the gaps in his leisure and sleeping time, but as a comprehensive research project, it is unlikely to be possible. It will take many years to complete and many scholars will have to work hard to complete it. During this waiting period, I hope that this overview of Bagan will serve as a precursor to keep people interested in Bagan and the Bagan period.)

I would like to express my gratitude to all the scholars who have written even a single line about Bagan so far, and to all the writers who have relied on me. I would also like to pay tribute to the scholars who will continue to study and write. As a compiler, I would like to take pride in using my time wisely and serving the public.
