Public leader Aung San Suu Kyi
Aung San Suu Kyi won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. She won it as a “leader of the country’s leading opposition” who supports democracy.
Since 1989, she has been under house arrest by the Burmese authorities for many years. However, her morale has never wavered and she has steadfastly resisted unjust laws. She has been active in the struggle for human rights and democracy in Myanmar. A courageous woman, Aung San Suu Kyi is often called the Iron Rose.
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was born on June 19, 1945, in Yangon, Myanmar, to General Aung San, the father of Burmese independence, and Daw Khin Kyi, a later Burmese ambassador.
Aung San Suu Kyi was only two years old when her father, General Aung San, was assassinated. She attended school in Burma until 1960, when her mother, Daw Khin Kyi, was appointed as the Burmese ambassador to India. She then continued her education in India and attended Oxford University.
