An 11th century city that can be reached by car. A legend that can be touched with your hands. I took off my shoes and walked along the dusty dirt road. The stone slabs here made it warm, like a tribal home.

If you enter a secret cave and follow an unexpected path, or descend an unexpected staircase, you will encounter the light of their time that has not disappeared for centuries. Inside the sealed cave, an unhappy Buddha is found on an island many centuries and miles away.

I can still see it until I get back. The Buddha, who still sits there, his arms missing, can be seen from anywhere in the world. An ancient pagoda in ruins inspires me more faith than a brand new pagoda built to be broadcast on the eight o'clock local news.

The children with dark skin and freckles found around this land are the best Burmese models.

No matter what age or time you look back, you can always find and take photos there that give you the “Wakyan period of memories” effect. The earthquake didn’t just pass him by, it’s one of those things that people who have crossed generations often encounter.

Bagan will never collapse again.
