IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It is a test designed to assess the English language skills of non-English speaking students who are studying in English-speaking countries. The IELTS test measures the level and style of English language proficiency. It is a test that helps prepare students for study in English-speaking countries by introducing them to the communicative skills required in those fields of study.
The difference between IELTS and TOEFL is that TOEFL tests Listening, Reading, and Writing, while IELTS tests Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking . The author had to take this type of test when he went to the UK as a scholar to study for a Post Graduate Diploma. That is why I am writing this article for those who are preparing for IELTS.
Description of the test
There are (Two) versions of the IELTS Test .
(1) Academic Module
(2) General Training Module
(1) Academic Module
The Academic Module is for students who wish to gain admission to higher education institutions that offer degree and diploma courses.
Test Format
- Listening Skill
4 sections, around 40 questions
Allow 30 minutes + transfer time
- Academic Reading Skill
3 sections, around 40 questions
Time allowed: 60 minutes
- Academic Writing Skill,
2 tasks
Time allowed: 60 minutes
- Speaking Skill
Allow 10 to 15 minutes.
- Total test time
2 hours 45 minutes
(2) General Training Module
This module is used for students who want to attend Secondary School (or) Vocational Training courses.
Test Format
- Listening Skill – 4 sections, around 40 questions
Duration: 30 minutes + transfer time
- General Training Reading Skill
3 sections, around 40 questions
Time allowed: 60 minutes
- General Training Writing Skill
2 tasks
Time allowed: 60 minutes
- Speaking Skill
Allow 10 to 15 minutes |
- Total test time
2 hours 45 minutes
Overall Band Score (or) Final Mark ( Total Score )
IELTS is a test of your ability to use the English language. It is usually based on a total score of 4 skills: listening, reading, writing & speaking. The band score for each skill is 9 to 1 .
The overall bands and their reported status are presented below.
- Band score 9
A Band Score of 9 is an Expert User (a person who is proficient in the language). This is the highest score on IELTS. They have a complete understanding of the language in all 4 skills, are fluent in speaking, and are able to write accurately and appropriately.
- Band Score 8
A person with a Band Score of 8 is a very good user. He/she has language skills but needs some accuracy, appropriate use and organization. He/she may have misunderstandings and misunderstandings in unfamiliar situations. He/she uses complex and detailed arguments.
- Band Score 7
A person with a Band Score of 7 is a good user of language . In some situations, there are inaccuracies, misunderstandings, errors, and inappropriate use of language. A person with this score is able to use complex language in general terms and understand detailed reasoning.
- Band Score 6
A person with a Band Score of 6 is a Competent user.
Despite inaccuracies, misunderstandings, and inappropriate usage, he is generally an effective user of language, especially in familiar situations, and can understand and use complex language reasonably well.
- Band Score 5
A person with a Band Score of 5 is a Modest user. 4 Although they make many mistakes in their skills, they are able to understand the overall meaning of situations and use the English language reasonably well.
- Band Score 4
A person with a Band Score of 4 is a Limited User. As a basic skill, this person has limited ability in familiar situations. This person has some difficulty in understanding and expressing 4 Skills. This person is unable to use complex language.
- Band Score 3
A person with a Band Score of 3 is Extremely limited. A person with this score understands only the general meaning of things in very familiar situations. A person with this score will find it very difficult to communicate. -
- Band Score 2
A person with a Band Score of 2 is an Intermittent user. They may have difficulty understanding written and spoken language.
- Band Score 1
A person with a Band Score of 1 is a Non-user. They have no ability to use the English language.
- Band Score 0
A person with a Band Score of 0 did not attempt the test.
IELTS pass mark
There is no set pass mark for IELTS . You need to achieve a Band Score that is determined by the university or college you are applying to . As a general rule, a Band Score below 5 is considered low for academic study. A Band Score above 6 is considered good enough for university or college. An overall Band Score of 5 (or) 6 is considered Borderline.
