From comparative advantage to capability advantage
9th February 2007

Since ancient times, countries have been compared to each other based on how rich their natural resources are. This is called Comparative Advantage. It can be said that there were times when technology was not yet fully utilized. In the 1980s, countries such as Singapore, Taiwan, and Hong Kong began to develop. When scholars studied the sources of development, they found that they developed without any need for natural resources, but with the help of people and technology. They had to change their thinking and theories. We entered the era of Competitive Advantage.

South Korea and North Korea, which began their lives in the ashes of the Korean War in the 1950s, are compared. The capitalist South Korea has progressed while the communist North Korea has stagnated. With the support of a system and institutional building with good laws, procedures, and rights protections, South Korea has become a tiger that has grown overnight on the global economic front.

The Soviet Union, once a great country, was also focused on military construction and trying to compete with the United States, and the encouragement of private enterprise was greatly reduced, and the competitive edge, the competitive ability, was finally extinguished. "Doing as" and "working" were clearly visible here. The result was that the Soviet Union finally collapsed and small countries that valued Competitive Advantage were forced to transition to capitalism.

Some communist and socialist countries that have not yet seen the beauty of the "comparative advantage" or "competitive power" continue to be stubborn, but as their rulers become wiser, even the great communist countries like China and Vietnam cannot stand it. They have to adjust the institutional building. They have not changed the political hierarchy, but they have significantly separated the economic sector and changed the capitalist-based system, adopting the "age of talent advantage".

When we say “capitalist,” some people think of it as “sucking blood,” “monopoly,” and “those with money.” Once upon a time, “capital” was the main character, but today’s “capital” includes “knowledge, technology, information, strategy,” etc. Based on these various aspects of “capital,” we are in an era where we are competing and trying to get ahead of others.

Those who believe in the opposition political system that claims that 'capitalism' is for the benefit of the few, while they themselves can do nothing, and have sold off their resources too greedily, have left many countries bankrupt. In the end, they follow others and take refuge in the camp with the excuse that "it was a mistake", but it is sad that the next generation has to bear this "bad fate" with thick skin.

Even the United States, the technological leader of the 21st century, the one with the comparative advantage in technology, and the world's strongest economy, has lamented that its competition has doubled compared to before. You will remember that Britain, Germany, and France, which were once the dominant colonial powers, were once the same. In the present era, their competitive edge has declined and they are now a distant shadow on the world stage. The 21st century economic strategy of the United States, which has developed with the later emerging countries of China, India, and the developed countries of Japan, Korea, Chinese Taipei, and Hong Kong, is an interesting match in acquiring the Competitive Advantage of "Capability Advantage."

The US diplomatic hint that China's trade surplus with the yuan could turn into a financial war if it cannot be resolved through negotiation is shocking. Remember the 1997 Asian financial crisis that hit ASEAN countries hard? Competing in talent shows can be a pain in the ass. It's likely that a year will tell who is really more talented.

(21) In the 21st century, how rich the resources are is not a very interesting story, but how much competitive edge they have. The times are changing very fast. Faster than expected speed, faster than expected. As soon as Apple released the iPhone, it immediately affected the market share of the major manufacturers such as Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, who had occupied a place in the mobile market. Apple's technological superiority

Consumers already know that talent is here. The sound of talent coming in shakes up competitors, and it directly shows how powerful the recognition of talent is in this era.

Developed countries are also trying to "add" capabilities to their own level, improving their competitiveness. They are becoming increasingly distant from the sleeping countries...

They are pale, blue, and have no idea why they are losing their hair. It is even worse in African countries.

As the times change, the concept of “From Comparative Advantage to Competitive Advantage” has become more and more clear. Technological advantage, information advantage, sound financial system, governance and legal protection are some of the characteristics of capability. Strong basic education plays an important role for research and new generations.

The competitive advantage of a nation is directly related to the capabilities of individuals and groups. Capacity Building is not a difficult thing to do. It is something that can happen if there is an institutional building that protects, maintains, and guides it.

The difference between one person and another is not very noticeable. The difference between a sleeper and a regular progressor is quite noticeable after a decade or two. Time will not be in your favor, so much so that you can catch up in some places, but not in others. "How rich are your parents?" is more important than "How much can you do?"
