Chapter (1)
Buddhism in Modern Life
Modern life and Buddhism
The topic as it stands has several parts to it: What is modern life? What is Buddhism? And what role has Buddhism to play in modern life?
This topic has many parts, as it stands: what is modern life, what is Buddhism, and then what role should Buddhism play in modern life?
Modern life itself is very difficult to define. One might say that modern life is characterized by the fact that the world is getting smaller that people are having greater access to each other that
communication barriers are fast disappearing: that it is possible for one to know what happens everywhere in the world within a short time, and thereby participate in the life of a larger cross-section of the world than one could have ever thought of. That would be one aspect of modern life.
Even modern life is very difficult to define. The world is getting smaller. Humans are coming into contact with each other more and more. Barriers to communication are rapidly disappearing, and events in all parts of the world can be known in a short time. In this way, one can participate in a wider part of the world than one could have imagined. Modern life can be defined by these unique characteristics. This is one aspect of modern life.
Related to that would be modern life understood in terms of science and technology. Man in his attempt to conquer nature, disease, natural barriers, has performed certain feats of a technological complexity which is quite mindboggling. That is another aspect of modern life.
Modern life, which is related to that perspective, is life understood from the perspective of science and technology. People
In an effort to overcome nature, disease, and natural obstacles, some of the most mind-boggling feats of engineering complexity have been accomplished. This is also an aspect of modern life.
A third. Perhaps a more disturbing aspect of modern life is that with the world getting closer. communication barriers breaking away, and scientific and technological advance becoming so rapid, we have come face to face with several problems in terms of economic and political rivalry, pollution, population explosion, scarcity of resources and the indiscriminate use of resources that might not be replaced. With these comes a host of other issues which can be plainly labeled as "survival".
The third and more disturbing aspect of modern life is that as the world becomes closer together, barriers to communication are broken down, and science and technology are rapidly advancing, we are faced with a number of problems: economic and political competition, environmental pollution, population explosion, scarcity of resources, and the reckless use of non-renewable resources. Along with these problems, many other issues of debate have arisen. These can be clearly labeled as “survival. ”
Chapter (2)
Can Modern Civilization Survive?
Can modern culture survive?
To this one may also add a moral dimension - unethical question - and ask: "To what extent, in the process of modernization and conquering nature, have we deviated from the ability to conquer ourselves? Has the struggle for survival meant that the modern man has become a slave to selfishness, bound by his own desires and his whims? Have we lost all the things of very special value to human beings such as interpersonal relationships, the anxiety to look after the well-being of others, the spirit of being of selfless service to others? Have we lost these?
