1. The first Kyaw Shinlu to ascend the throne
At the Fifth Sanghayana in the city of Yadanarbon, King Mindon was sick and had fallen into a coma. King Mindon was already old. It was not as if he would fall into a coma just because he was old. To tell the truth, King Mindon had suffered a terrible loss of glory and honor, and he had been tortured by the rebels.
This is true. In fact, the living King Mindon did not walk a path of flowers in conquering and ruling the country. He had to travel a difficult and tiring journey of establishing the country. Look, did King Mindon gain the throne after facing and fighting? In 153 AD, King Min Pho rebelled against his predecessor, King Bagan. The revolution was successful and he was able to seize the Golden Palace of Amarapura. In fact, King Mindon did not rebel against his predecessor, King Bagan, because he wanted to seize power. He did so because he was looking for Prince Mindon and his brother, King Kanaung, when a woman in Amarapura, Nay Pyi Taw, was robbed at gunpoint.
There are false allegations that the disciples of Prince Mindon and Prince Kanaung were involved in the robbery. In the end, the disciples showed hostile behavior towards the two princes, their masters. Some news also said that if the case did not come to light, the two princes would be arrested. If it were true, there must have been other reasons in the Bagan king's plan to arrest Mindon and Prince Kanaung. There are people in the Amarapura palace who are worried that they will suppress, break, and imprison such active princes as Mindon and Prince Kanaung. That is why they have been looking for a reason for the two princes, and why they have caused trouble. In any case, Prince Mindon had gone to Shwebo with his brother Prince Kanaung. Prince Kanaung was a much more distinguished man. That is why. Every time they faced the troops of the Bagan king, Prince Mindon and Prince Kanaung were victorious. The golden fortune of the princes of the past reigned until they finally conquered the Golden Palace of Amarapura and ruled as kings.
Prince Mindon was carried on the golden throne of Amarapura by his brother Prince Kanaw on his shoulders. Prince Mindon had successfully conquered the throne of Bagan. In this situation, it could be said that the path ahead for Prince Mindon was already smooth. However, for Prince Mindon, the battle was not over. At that time, the war between the Amarapura Kingdom and the British government was not over. There were battles on both sides in the lower regions. The British colonialists had attacked and occupied Arakan and the delta region as far as Myitkyina. At that time, Prince Mindon, who had successfully conquered the Amarapura Kingdom, also had to bear the consequences of the First and Second Anglo-Burmese Wars on his shoulders. At this time, King Mindon had to decide whether to continue the war with the British or to end it.
King Mindon was a man of great insight. He saw no benefit in continuing to fight with the British, who had great weapons, and would only become a foreign slave. I will leave it at that. I will avoid confrontation with the British colonialists as long as I can. If we can negotiate and negotiate, we may even be able to regain the lower regions.
King Mindon also had such a dream. King Mindon let the Second Anglo-Burmese War continue. He did not continue the war. He did not sign a peace treaty. Let it be. He would do state work during the time when there was a war. During the reign of King Bagan, the country was bankrupt due to the war. The public economy was in a state of disarray. Similarly, in all religious and social matters, King Mindon kept his brother Kanaw in the palace, while he himself devoted himself to state work.
King Mindon hated the British colonialists. He was resentful. He did not want to hear the sound of the British if possible, but he was a golden genius with a righteous mind. Just hating and resenting the British would not solve the problem. He had to make his military and economic power stronger than theirs. He thought that only when the country was strong could the British army be driven into the sea. So what should be done first to make the country strong?
King Mindon implemented a plan called “to stab with his bones.” He invited British officials and guests to the palace. Through these guests, he learned about British procedures. Then, he heard news of the great growth of Yangon, a small town in the country.
I heard that in Yangon, instead of the traditional Burmese bamboo-walled houses, they are building stilt houses. I heard that international and maritime trade and business are flourishing. And shouldn't our country also have a large city like theirs with strong trade and commerce? Can't we establish a large and powerful armed force through that?
With these ideas in mind, King Mindon planned to abandon the isolated capital of Amarapura and build a new capital on the vast plains along the banks of the Rawatty River. Thus, the new capital, the jewel of Mandalay, emerged.
Mandalay, the jewel of the capital, is a beautiful city with magnificent buildings, temples, pagodas, and bridges. The city was built systematically, with few winding roads. Public transportation by train and bus is easy.
Mandalay Mountain seems to be towering over Nay Pyi Taw. The mountain is also beautifully adorned with pagodas and temples.
The great statue of Maha Myat Muni, which was brought with great difficulty from Dhanyawaddy, Rakhine, became a magnificent and majestic symbol of the jewel-like city. Before it was even finished, King Mindon also built the Emerald Palace, which was beautifully matched with the temple, the pond, and the pagodas.
Your country is beautiful and glorious. Look, the moat flows around the palace and the palace halls. The rose-red walls, the warriors, and the nobles are all reflected in the moat.
The golden-hued royal raft proudly raised its crest like a falcon, swaying gently on the water.
The Golden City, the Golden Pagoda, the Golden Palace, surrounded by majestic buildings, was the residence of King Mindon in 1221. This is how the year King Mindon established the Mandalay capital was commemorated. Ogkyit Kyaw Mandalay.
King Mindon has established and ruled the Jewel City. What else is needed? The new Jewel City is now under the rule of the King. There is still a need. The Jewel City still needs to be truly filled with jewels.
King Mindon made an effort to make this happen.
If only the other towns and villages occupied by the British were not returned, then there would be no more. I want Pathein back. Isn't Pathein a port city with access to the sea? If we get that city back, Burmese ships will be able to travel to the world. Then there will be communication between the jeweled capital and the countries of the world. In this way, the country's political, economic, religious and military affairs will not be able to improve any more than they are now.
King Mindon invited Dr. Mark, a teacher of English in Nay Pyi Taw, to the palace to help implement the plan. The king then told Dr. Mark about his anticipated project.
"Dr. Mark, when you return to London, please convey to Queen Victoria the honors I have bestowed upon you. Have I treated British citizens like you kindly? Please convey to her those things. Have you also been allowed to build a monastery in Mandalay? And you have seen the great portrait of Queen Victoria, a gift from the British Mission, hanging in the palace, don't you? Please convey to the Queen those things." Dr. Mark nodded his head in agreement with everything that King Mindon had to say.
King Mindon spoke again.
“Dr. Mark, listen carefully to what I say. When you return to London, I will present a large gold vase for Queen Victoria and a bracelet for the royal cabinet. Please convey that these items are gifts from my Majesty in the name of my beloved… and then…”
King Mindon continued with the most important statement.
"My brother must personally petition Queen Victoria to return Pathein to us."
