5. National School Principal U Thant

U Thant, who served as a senior high school teacher at Pantanaw National High School, had a very happy and contented life. U Thant was originally

Being a lover of literature, he enjoyed teaching his students a lot. He believed that teaching was a job that not only earned merit but also provided both self-interest and charity. At that time, U Thant was a teacher who had to polish and polish the future generation of good children of Burma under British rule.

U Thant's time as a schoolteacher was also a time when a group of young, educated writers in Burma were developing a new style of literary writing under the name of "Contemporary Literature." Among those who pioneered and pioneered Contemporary Literature were a group of young writers from the circle of Master Farnivel's Ganta Loka magazine. In addition, many other magazines emerged and disappeared, and Burmese literature

It was also the time when the press was most active in the world. Therefore, U Thant began to write literary articles and sent them to magazines and journals, including the world of literature. As someone who had studied literature for years out of passion, U Thant's literary works were rarely rejected by the press. They were often selected and published.

It was at this time that the seeds of U Thant's literary career began to grow, with his pen name "Thilawa" and his writings appearing in print. U Thant worked as a high school teacher for two years from 1929 to the end of 1930, before taking the high school teacher examination held by the Myanmar Government Education Department. In that examination,

The benefits of both the experience and the knowledge that U Thant had gained in the world of teaching and learning were obvious. U Thant was the first in the whole of Burma.

While serving as a teacher, U Thant was highly respected by his students.

At the National High School, Teacher Thant was loved by every student. In addition to his dedication to teaching literature, his smiling and friendly demeanor was the main factor that made him loved and respected by everyone. At that time, U Thant was a member of the Executive Committee of the Council of National Education in Yangon and contributed articles to the National Educationist published by the Council for the Advancement of National Education (CNE) whenever he had the opportunity.

The magazine was published by prominent figures such as National Education Minister U Pho Kyar, U Soe Win, and National Education Minister U Myint, who were all leaders of national education at the time.

U Thant also wrote literary articles in the magazines Thuriya and Myanma Alin. In the magazine Ganth Loka, U Thant continued to write literary articles and poems in English and Burmese since 1930. U Thant's close friend U Nu met a woman while working as a school teacher in Pantanaw. U Nu fell in love with Daw Mya Yi, the daughter of U Aung Nyein, the chairman of the Pantanaw National High School Management Committee and the owner of a rice mill. U and Daw Mya Yi fell in love, but they never got close.

U Nu was not a wealthy man at that time, so Daw Mya Yi's parents could not agree with U Nu and their daughter. One day, Daw Mya Yi ran away from her parents' house. Daw Mya Yi ran away to U Nu's house. However... U Nu was a widow.

She was away when she returned to her parents in the city. At that time, Daw Mya Yi's parents went to the police station and found their daughter in a jewelry store.

A case was filed for theft and escape. Daw Mya Yi was hiding in the house of U Bo Yin, the owner of the rice mill in Taw Tay village, five miles from Pantanaw town. U Nu's men quickly chased after U Nu and called him. U Nu returned by motorboat and met Daw Mya Yi, and the two lovers fled to Yangon.

Although U Nu and Daw Mya Yi were later married by their parents, U Nu never returned to Pantanaw. U Nu's

U Thant takes over the position of principal. Now U Thant

He held the positions of Superintendent and Headmaster. U Thant was invited by U Nu to Rangoon and introduced to Aung San, who was then involved in the national movement. U Nu was now studying law at the University of Rangoon.

U Thant often went to Yangon. It was to attend meetings of the Myanmar Textbook Committee, the National Education Committee, and the School Principals' Association. U Thant was not affiliated with any political party at that time. He was very interested in the affairs of the country, but he did not like those who pretended to be political and did whatever they wanted. The so-called politician

They are a very difficult class of people. They are often seen as people who strive to be famous and known, and who are often divided and hostile at times when they should be united with others.

U Thant's hard work and dedication paid off, even at a young age, when he was promoted to the position of principal of Pantanaw National High School in 1931, when he was only 22 years old. U Thant, at the age of 26, married Ma Thein Tin, the daughter of Daw Kye, a tobacconist in Pantanaw, in 1935.

Ma Thein Tin is the daughter of U Thin Daw Kye, a high-ranking lawyer in Tada U Township, Sagaing District. Ma Thein Tin was born in Tada U Township.

Born. Daw Kye was originally from Pantanaw, but as the saying goes, she married lawyer U Thin and moved to Tada U, where she gave birth to Ma Thein Tin.

When Ma Thein Tin's father, U Thin, died of 96-year-old cancer in Tada U, Daw Kye left Tada U and returned to Pantanaw with her only daughter, and started a cigar business with her daughter Ma Thein Tin. Daw Kye's cigar business was successful, and the two of them lived comfortably. Since they were originally wealthy, Daw Kye and her son were not well-known in Pantanaw. Daw Kye loved her father's daughter as if she were her own daughter.

He taught her to be virtuous and healthy through stories. Ma Thein Tin also led her mother's smoking booth and lived a virtuous life, just like the beautiful jade jade.

- Thus, Ma Thein Tin's beauty and good character made her reputation among the young men of Pantanaw. When U Thant and Ma Thein Tin got married, U Thant had to make great efforts to make his future wife like his mother.

U Thant loved Ma Thein Tin, but he did not have the same kind of courtship as other contemporaries. It is undeniable that he cherished the crown of beauty of the city. However, it was difficult

U Thant did not have any close relationships with his female friends. U Thant did not mingle with the students while he was in high school. Many students wanted to be friends with U Thant because he was the best in class, but U Thant, who was a reclusive monk, could not get along with those girls.

When he arrived at the university, U Thant could not associate with the young university students of Inya. U Thant firmly held the principle that he had come to the university for no other purpose than education, so he did not think of associating with the young university students. Now, when he was appointed as the head of the national school again, he was only 26 years old, but he was at the top of the list of famous people in the city. Therefore, it was no longer natural for young men to flirt with young women.

Because he was a young man and a high-ranking official, U Thant was also in the eyes of the parents of young women. U Thant's mother, Daw Nan Thaung, was offered an engagement by the parents in person, through intermediaries, and through the parents. U Thant was not interested in anyone, and only liked Ma Thein Tin's dignified manner. He loved Ma Thein Tin. He only wanted to marry Ma Thein Tin. However, Ma Thein Tin was a little older than U Thant. U Thant's mother was very unhappy about this.

U Thant's mother was already impressed by Ma Thein Tin's abilities. In addition, there was one thing that made it difficult to refuse Ma Thein Tin. That was because U Thant's uncle, U Oh Thit, had an affair with Ma Thein Tin's aunt. In this case,

She is not related by blood or lineage. Ma Thein Tin is a young woman who is well-educated in Pali literature and is very religious. She is very devoted to Buddhism. She is a child who is careful to maintain the Buddha's teachings, the Dhamma, and the Sangha's teachings.

According to local sources, Ma Thein Tin had already planned to marry U Thant if she had not met him. U Thant had tried to persuade his mother to marry Ma Thein Tin. The problem was that when U Thant's younger brother U Khant had a marital problem, U Thant had intervened on his mother's side to prevent his brother from marrying his girlfriend. U Khant was also in love with Daw Saw Yin, who was slightly older than him. U Thant advised his brother not to marry a woman older than him.

However, U Khant stole his lover, Daw Saw Yin, and ran away. Thus, when U Thant, a bachelor, intervened to solve his brother's marriage problem, his efforts failed. U Thant, who did not want his brother to marry an older man, finally gave in. However, U Thant's lover was also older than him. In fact, U Thant had prevented U Khant from marrying her only to please his mother. When it came to personal matters, U Thant also prioritized the love that came from the heart.

U Thant's mother, Daw Nan Thaung, did not object to U Thant's lover. There were many reasons for this. Her eldest son also loved Ma Thein Tin very much. Ma Thein Tin was also very kind. She agreed to marry her son and Ma Thein Tin because she did not want to make her son unhappy. U Thant and Daw Thein Tin were engaged. However, the wedding was not held immediately. U Thant had to wait until his younger brother U Thaung passed his graduation examination from Yangon University, and the wedding ceremony would have to be held in the month of Waghyut. Auspicious days were chosen for U Thant, who was born on a Friday, and Daw Thein Tin, who was born on a Saturday. The wedding was planned for November 1934.

But U Thant waited patiently for the wedding day. Daw Thein Tin listened to everything U Thant's parents had planned. Thus, in November 1934, U Thant's wedding was held in a grand manner at the house of Daw Thein Tin's mother, Daw Kye. Friends and acquaintances from both sides came to the wedding in large numbers.

Daw Thein Tin was very happy to have a husband like U Thant, who was full of character. Daw Thein Tin's female friends knew U Thant's qualities very well, so they happily said to Daw Thein Tin, "You have a good husband, Ma Thein Tin, you've won the lottery." That's right. At that time, it was very lucky for girls to marry U Thant, who was a well-known man in the city, a modern scholar, and a very full of character.

U Thant's life journey continued happily ever after. U Thant was also very happy to have found a beautiful and intelligent wife to accompany him on his journey through life.

I was satisfied. I was also happy because I was able to repay my mother by taking care of her. In addition, I was able to go to school, which I loved.

I was especially happy because I was raising the future children of Myanmar through my work as a teacher.

Yes.

Not only that, U Thant also served the country as a writer. Since the 1930s, the Burmese press has been publishing articles and poems by the great writer. U Thant was involved in school work.

He worked during school hours and spent the rest of his time writing. He also practiced a healthy habit of walking to Shwe Myin Tin Pagoda every morning. U Thant was also fond of playing billiards. He would go to the Government Club on Post Road with his friends and officials and play billiards every evening. He would also occasionally go to the Club on the Beach Road and play billiards.

After U Thant got married, he moved to his mother-in-law Daw Kye's house in Sint O Tan. U Thant and Daw Thein Tin had their first child, Maung Bo. U Thant and Daw Thein Tin were madly in love. His grandmother Daw Nan Thaung and Daw Kye also loved their grandson dearly. Maung Bo was also very cute. He was a beautiful, fair-skinned child. He could speak and understand words when he was one year old. However, Maung Bo became sick soon after his birth.

Maung Bo had a fever when he was a child. The child did not get better, so he went to a Burmese doctor to treat him. However, the fever did not go away. He went to another doctor to treat him. Maung Bo's fever did not go away. Relatives and friends said that if Maung Bo was given a name, he would recover. So U Thant's family held a naming ceremony for Maung Bo. A total of 400 relatives and friends were invited.

Maung Bo had been healthy since the naming ceremony. However, within that same year, he fell ill again. This time, it took the life of the child. U Thant wrote to his brother U Khant. That day was September 22, 1936.

"My brother passed away yesterday evening at 3:30 due to a fever. I didn't think he would leave the world so soon. He was buried at 5:00 in the evening. Ma Thein Tin is still inconsolable. I wonder if I'm dreaming too. Life is really a long dream."

To extinguish the fire of U Thant and Daw Thein Tin's love affair, a group of friends decided to adopt a 4-month-old baby boy. The baby's parents were unable to care for him until he grew up, so they gave him up to U Thant. Both U Thant and Daw Thein Tin loved the baby.

They loved him. They named the child “Maung Saw Lwin”. | Shortly after adopting the child, they gave birth to their daughter Aye Aye.

After a while, she gave birth to her son, Maung Tin Maung. Now, U Thant and his family are very happy with their three children. Soon, the Japanese army entered Burma. U Thant listened to foreign news on the radio.

The news from December 1941 onwards was unbelievable. | On December 7-9 of that year, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. | On December 15, the Japanese reached Cape Victoria, the southernmost point of Burma.
