The Law of the Conflict
The following is the speech on the theme of peace and reconciliation delivered by Prime Minister U Nu in New Delhi, India, on January 11, 1962.
Dear members of the National Institute of Physics and Chemistry,
I understand that your duty as scientists is none other than to discover new laws of nature yourself and to test the old laws of nature that other scientists have discovered. That is why, as I meet with you today, I would like to present to you an old law of nature that was discovered in your great India more than 2,500 years ago.
This ancient law of nature is none other than this. It is the law of nature that can free all beings living in the 31 realms, including humans, gods, and Brahma, from all suffering. The person who discovered this law of nature is none other than Gautama Buddha, a great son and jewel of India.
You scientists...
This great Dhamma was summarized by the Buddha Gautama in this way: First, let me recite it in Pali. Please be patient and listen. After I recite it in Pali, I will explain the meaning.
Patissamuppada Pali
Ignorance is the cause of formation, formation is the cause of knowledge, knowledge is the cause of name and form, name and form is the cause of the body, the cause of the body is the cause of pain, the cause of pain is the cause of craving, the cause of craving is the cause of attachment, the cause of attachment is the cause of existence, birth is the cause of birth
The cessation of ignorance is the cessation of attachment, the cessation of attachment is the cessation of consciousness. The cessation of consciousness is the cessation of name and form, the cessation of name and form is the cessation of the body, the cessation of the body is the cessation of the senses, the cessation of the senses is the cessation of feeling, the cessation of feeling is the cessation of craving, the cessation of craving is the cessation of attachment, the cessation of attachment is the cessation of existence. The cessation of life, the cessation of birth, the cessation of birth, the cessation of old age, the cessation of sorrow, the cessation of suffering
They don't see the truth.
You scientists...
Let me now explain the Pali I recited. Beings are blinded by the defilements of greed, anger, and ignorance, so they do not see the truth. Not knowing the truth, beings are constantly striving to improve themselves in order to be happy. Because of this improvement, new souls are constantly arising. Because of these new souls, form and name are constantly arising. Because of this form and name, the six sense organs, the eyes, ears, tongue, body, and mind, are constantly arising. Because of this eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind, all living beings in the world are constantly coming into contact with inanimate objects. Because of this constant coming into contact, feelings of good and bad are constantly arising. Because of this constant coming into contact, cravings are constantly arising. Because of this constant coming into contact, cravings are constantly arising. Because of this continuous occurrence of attachment, there are continuous existences that can cause Brahmas, gods, humans, hells, animals, demons, and ahurakas. Because of this continuous existence of Brahmas, gods, humans, hells, animals, demons, and ahurakas, there are continuous existences of Brahmas, gods, humans, hells, animals, demons, and ahurakas. Because of this continuous existence of Brahmas, gods, humans, hells, animals, demons, and ahurakas, there are continuous existences of old age, death, anxiety, lamentation, physical suffering, mental suffering, and mental anguish.
When the defilements of greed, anger, and ignorance are destroyed and the truth is seen, beings are liberated from the condition of striving for happiness and well-being. Because of this liberation, new souls do not arise. Because these new souls do not arise, new forms and names do not arise. Because these forms and names do not arise, the six sense organs called eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind do not arise. Because these eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind do not arise, there is no contact between living beings and inanimate objects. Because these contact between living beings and inanimate objects does not arise, there is no feeling. Because these feelings do not arise, there is no craving. Because this craving does not arise, there is no attachment. Because this attachment does not arise, there is no existence of existence of Brahmas, devas, humans, hellish animals, demons, and other deities. Because these existences do not arise, Brahmas, devas, There will be no more human beings, hells, animals, demons, and deities. Since there will be no more brahma, devas, human beings, hells, animals, demons, and deities, there will be no more suffering due to old age, suffering due to death, suffering due to worry, suffering due to lamentation, suffering due to physical suffering, suffering due to mental suffering, and suffering due to unbearable anxiety in the mind.
You scientists...
After hearing my explanation, you can clearly understand that the reason why beings are constantly floating in the ocean of suffering that I just mentioned is not because they are blinded by greed, anger, and ignorance. You can also clearly understand that if these greed, anger, and ignorance are extinguished and they can see the truth, they will be freed from this suffering.
So you scientists...
How do we eradicate greed, anger, and ignorance to gain a clear perspective?
