His father was Augustine Washington and his mother was Mary Beth Washington. He grew up on a farm near Fredericksburg, and his father died when Washington was 11 years old. He studied mathematics and surveying, and at the age of 16 he went to live with his half-brother Lawrence. Lawrence was a builder, and his most famous building was Mount Vernon. After defeating the British, George Washington advocated for a federal government with equal powers among the states. He presided over the Constitutional Convention of the United States in 1787 and played a key role in the ratification of the Constitution.

George Washington's ability, courage, and perseverance led to his unanimous election as the first President of the United States, and he was sworn in on April 30, 1789. He served two terms (1789 to 1797) and declined a third term, despite repeated requests. After retiring from the presidency, he continued to tour his estates on horseback, where he caught a cold and strep throat due to the cold and rain, and died on December 14, 1799. George Washington was a landowner, and at his death he left behind 70,000 acres of land in Virginia and 40,000 acres in West Virginia .
