Hepatitis B is a virus. More specifically, it is a DNA virus. Some people get it in the blood for a short time and then disappear, while others never do. It usually doesn't show any symptoms, so the infected person doesn't even know they have it. It can also be related to ethnicity. It is more common in people of Chinese descent and less common in people of Indian descent.
