This book, entitled Lokaniti, which is extracted from the scriptures, will be briefly described in the Magadha (Pali) language.
(1) After kowtowing the Three Gems, I will recite briefly in Pali this Loka Niti treatise made up of extracts from various texts.
Explanation: Ancient scribes would worship the Buddha, the Dhamma, and the Sangha before writing their own treatises. This was customary. The Lokaniti was based on information from other texts.
It is a book that has been extracted and judged.
Explanation: Treatise writers of old made obedience to the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Sangha before they wrote the treatise. This is according to custom. Loka Niti is a compilation of points and facts extracted from various treatises. The author says he is going to write (or recite) briefly.
(2) Truly, this book is the lifeblood of men in the world. It is also their parents. It is also their teachers. It is also their friends. Therefore, a man who is able to learn this book of ethics is a man of great insight and high learning.
(2) In this world, Loka Niti is the essence, the parents, the teacher or the friend of men. The man who has mastered this treatise is full of general knowledge and is noble and educated.
Explanation: This book of worldly ethics is a reliable educational book for mankind. A person who has mastered this book is a scholar full of knowledge and wisdom.
Explanation: This Loka Niti treatise is a dependable book of instructions. The person who is well versed in this treatise is one who is full of general knowledge and well-educated.
(3) Where can a lazy person acquire knowledge? Where can a person without knowledge acquire wealth? Where can a person without wealth acquire friends? Where can a person without friends acquire happiness? Where can a person without happiness acquire goodness? Where can a person without goodness acquire Nibbana?
(3) How will the lazy person acquire knowledge? How will the person without knowledge get wealth? How will the person without wealth get friends! How will the person without friends obtain happiness? How will the person gain merit without happiness? How will the person without merit attáin Nibbana?
Explanation: This verse describes the negative consequences of laziness. If you are lazy, you will not gain knowledge; if you do not gain knowledge, you will not gain wealth; if you do not gain wealth, you will not have friends; if you do not have friends, you will not have happiness; if you do not have happiness, you will not have merit; if you do not have merit, you will not attain Nibbana. The main thing is not to be lazy.
Explanation: This stanza shows the series of bad effects of laziness. A lazy person will not get knowledge, then wealth, then friends, then happiness, then merit, and then such a person will not attain Nibbana. It is important not to be lazy.
(4) There is no possession like wisdom. Those who steal wisdom cannot take it. Wisdom is a friend in this world. It brings happiness in the next life.
(4) There is nothing equal to learning. Thieves cannot steal learning. In this world, learning is a friend and mate. It carries happiness to the next life.
Explanation: Knowledge is the most important thing in human life. If you have knowledge, you will be successful in this life.
May you be blessed in the next life.
Explanation: In human life learning is most important. If one has learned, one can get happiness in this life as well as in the after-life.
(5) One should not forget that insight is lacking. One should keep it in one's mind. Just as a well in a hill is filled with water after many long periods of pouring,
(5) Do not think little of general knowledge. You should store it in your mind. The anthill will be full after drops of water fall on it for a long time.
Explanation: Do not underestimate knowledge. Keep all the knowledge you gain in your mind. If you pour water on a mound for a long time, the mound will fill with water.
Explanation: Do not despise general knowledge. You should acquire it. Your mind will be full of knowledge gradually just as an anthill is full after drops of water falling on it for a long time.
(6) Do not think of the art of speech or the craft as being inferior. The art of being refined is also a profession.
If only.
(6) Do not think little of art or science. If one is well versed in one of them, that one will become a means of earning one's living.
Explanation: Poetry should be considered an art, and craftsmanship should be considered a science. If you are proficient in any of these two arts, it will be a profession for you.
Explanation: Art is theoretical knowledge. Science is practical knowledge. If one has learned one of these two branches of learning, that knowledge will be good for earning one's living.
(7) There are no rubies in every mountain, no elephants in every forest, no sandalwood in every forest. There is no wise sage in every place.
(7) There is no ruby in every mountain. There is no life-sustaining pearl in every elephant. There is no sandalwood in every forest. There is no sage in every place.
